Where The Sun Sets takes place in London, England, in the 1890s. At this point in time, Britain is at the height of its imperial power, consolidating itself as the empire "where the sun never sets." Importantly, Britain derived its power and wealth not only through the exploitation of colonial territories abroad, but also through the exploitation of the working-class and the urban poor at home. London dealt with the pitfalls of rapid urbanization, and was a city of contrasts: the lavishness of the aristocracy and the factory-owning burgeoisie co-existed with the over-crowded, disease-ridden slums where the urban poor congregated. In this context of wide-spread, some men tried to make a living through alternative means: crime. Where The Sun Sets follows a young man who leads a gang of criminals as they try to 1) evade law, 2) enhance their clout in the London underground, and 3) make a living.
Game Introduction
- Genre (Action/Adventure)
- Given the nature of a game based on criminals and gangs, I believe this has to be action and adventure.
- GamePlay
- The game takes after elements from the Grand Theft Auto and the Red Dead Redemption franchises. It is an open-world concept, in which the players are free to roam and interact with the NPCs and the environment around them. However, there are still missions to be done that should advance the story forward. Similarly to the two games, it would be interesting to have an honour system based on the choices that the player makes in those missions. Causing a ruckus on the streets makes law enforcement come after you, and you need to hide until they're gone. Each successful scam or robbery that you pull ups your clout with the London underground.
- Target audience & platforms
- The primary audience would be late teenagers and young adults (16-30).
- Look and Feel
- Because it is a game based on London, the ambience will certainly be dark and foggy. It should feel dirty, humid, and filthy. The game is meant to be heavy at some points, but not too heavy - there should still be funny moments.
